Brothers and Sisters of the Diocese of New Jersey,

This is an exciting time for our diocese! You have elected an incredibly and wonderfully diverse, passionate and dedicated search committee. Our search process is a spiritual one, grounded in prayer, to discern God’s call to those candidates who will be led to discern with us their calling into the role of head pastor, spiritual guide, and organized leader of the Diocese of New Jersey.

The Very Rev. Ronald Clingenpeel from the Episcopal Church’s Office of Pastoral Development is working with us as our consultant to help guide us and share best practices throughout this process.  As the consultant for the last Diocese of NJ search, he also has a solid knowledge of the Diocese and our history.

In order to do this work, our committee needs your input on what you’d like to see in the next Bishop and so we have also engaged Holy Cow Consulting, an experienced data benchmarking organization that has supported many Episcopal bishop searches, to support us in gathering and analyzing that input.  We have organized ourselves into six subcommittees and appointed chairs for each group. Those subcommittees are profile; search and independent nominations, discernment, retreat, education and communication and executive, which is made up of the chairs of each subcommittee.

As you can imagine, our work is highly confidential but we plan to share as much information and be as transparent as we can, while maintaining the necessary confidentiality for those candidates exploring a call to be our next Bishop. We have been and will continue to share updates via email, posting on our website, and in Good News in the Garden State.

Finally, we want to express our gratitude to Bishop and Susan Stokes for their ministry and care for us all and we will continue to hold them in prayer as Bishop Stokes approaches retirement. Thanks as well to Fr. Ed Zelley and the Standing Committee and the Diocesan Staff for the wonderful support you have provided us with.  And, thanks to all of you for trusting us with this vital work as we continue to build upon our inheritance and discern together our next bishop and where God is calling the Diocese of New Jersey.

Peace and blessings,

The Bishop Search and Nominating Committee
